We Need Each Other

For shame, helplessness & loneliness
  • I look forward to sharing a breath of fresh air or a moment of rest with you through this audio. We'll create another poem together on Sunday—keep an eye out for the Poetry Collective post in your inbox.

“The deeper truth is that we can’t possibly always be there for another in the way we want to, and we are never feeble in our need for others when we cannot bear this life alone.” Image: the many hands that make a good morning.

I have long been seduced by the word self-empowerment, for my true desire has always been to be self-willed, wild, and winged…like all free things.

I’ve carried this notion that a life fleshed on the bones of self-sufficiency, self-empowerment, and self-mastery was one of willpower and devotion to Self; a consistent turning inward when I needed help.

And this has brought me so far—perhaps it has done you well too.

I can certainly testify that my life is better for the responsibility I’ve taken over my own happiness. But there is a deep fracture line that appears when we begin to stay in the immaturity of this notion that we are solely responsible for everything that manifests in our lives. It is a fragmented way of life, believing that success rests solely on our individual efforts.
