Dear beloved community,

Over the next few weeks, I will be offering you a new meditation and a Remembering wild episode on the theme of belonging. Together, we will ground ourselves in the often-overlooked kinship that we have with the Great Mystery.

This is a personal topic of mine that I tend to struggle with most. I was fortunate enough to be born and raised in the wilds of Southern Africa (Johannesburg, Eastern Cape, Zambia & Zimbabwe) to parents who were themselves from a mixture of Celtic, Nordic, Slavic, and Persian origins.

I am proud that these nations have bottle-necked their way into who I am. But I also find frustration in adopting traditional belonging practices because of their attachment to country and place.

I know belonging is ultimately created - and those of us who are a mix of many nations, or those of us who equally feel that disconnect through the lack of home in ourselves and in our families, is the new paradigm.

We as a species face new and unprecedented challenges in cultivating a deep sense of belonging (‘loneliness’ being today’s greatest influence on mental and emotional wellbeing.) I believe we each have a responsibility to carry forth a new definition of the word and find out what it truly means to us as both an individual and as a collective consciousness so that displacement does not become our legacy.

Today’s poem is the first of three perspectives I have on the topic; That none of us belong here anyway and that we come from somewhere many of us often spend our lives unknowingly yearning after.

The upcoming meditation and Remembering Wild episode will cover the next two perspectives of kinship referring to belonging through our physical bodies and belonging through becoming an ally of indigenous heritage.

Let me know where you are from and what gives you a sense of belonging in the comments, and I look forward to connecting with you all soon!

With Love, Sez

POEM
(unabridged version)

No one belongs.

We are all birthed from myth,
from the soft fur that shawls
the curve of reindeer ear -
from the ebony beak of raven who
fastened earth into place -
from forbidden gardens and
the rib of loneliness -
from women who fell through
sky and turtle’s back -
from lotus flower,
sprung from the navel of deity -
from the flesh of battling brothers,
we drink from the rivers of their blood,
and live upon the mountain of their bones -
from curled up scale
of sleeping rainbow serpent -
from cosmic golden egg -
from moonblood…
